Pay-what-you-can photography

Ever heard of it? I recently saw a photographer post about this. She'd said she'd debated it for a while and carefully weighed the consequences and all that. I've never considered doing this and I'll you why (no judgment against her): I feel it lets people think you don't value your work, and if you don't, no one else will. I can totally see her point of view, though. You want to expand your base and give everyone a chance to experience what you offer. And after all, it's expensive to hire and pro and if you are one of the people that can tell the difference between pro work and iPhone work, then you're happy to pay someone for their talent. However, your wallet may feel differently. I get wanting to give those people lasting memories and hey, you may wind up even building your client base. But are those the clients you want? Do you want referrals that could turn into phone calls that sound like "Um, hi, I hear you offer a discount. That's awesome cuz I've got 6 kids and 12 relatives and two pets and everyone needs a wardrobe change and by the way, can I print those photos at CVS They're not watermarked, right?" Insert cringe here. Ok, not everyone is like that... but there are enough of them out there to give me pause. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I've been told plenty I'm expensive (I'm totally not, but whatever). So I'd love to hear your thoughts and see if you've partaken in any similar offer and how it worked out, etc. Go ahead and respond here, or on my FB page. Link is up top! Talk soon.

Warmly,
Susan
